Who I Am
My Story
I'm Ceanna Ting-Yan Cheung, a fourth-year BSc Chemistry (Accredited) student at the University of Alberta, where I've spent the last three years exploring the chemistry of energy materials — particularly the extraction and characterisation of bitumen from Alberta's oil sands.
During my second year, I completed a 12-month industry internship at Suncor Syncrude in Edmonton, where my research focused on developing and improving solvent-based extraction techniques. This led to a first-author publication in The Canadian Journal of Chemical Engineering on dynamic accelerated solvent extraction — a faster, more reliable method for oil sands analysis — completed under the mentorship of Matthew Ripmeester.
Outside the laboratory, I'm drawn to the intersection of fundamental chemistry and real-world environmental and energy challenges. I'm currently seeking opportunities in analytical chemistry, energy research, and environmental science where I can apply my technical skills and continue growing as a scientist.
